June 2021: The OLL National History Day team of Mary Riley, Josephine Marsh, Hannah Hysell & Lila Baliunas finished in the top 10 in the nation for their Junior Group Performance! Their entry, "Arts as Propaganda: Communism Meeting Democracy Through the 20th Century", examined how Diego Rivera's "Man at the Crossroads" controversy with the Rockefellers and Russia's 1959 tour of the Bolshoi Ballet in America, show different aspects of the role of arts as propaganda.
They also won "Outstanding Junior Entry" for the Michigan Affiliate - the top Junior Project out of ALL categories in Michigan! Great Job!
April 2021: Screams of happiness split the air as OLL Middle School students Lila Baliunas, Hannah Hysell, JoJo Marsh, and Mary Riley watched the Michigan History Day State Competition awards ceremony online. They have taken 1st place in their category, Junior Group Performance, at the state finals! We are SO proud of the hard work these girls have put in. They will be representing their school and state virtually at the National History Day Competition this year. Normally held at the University of Maryland over the course of a week in June, our students will have to stay home this year to watch how their original script and research does virtually at the National level. Go Lakers!
